Malvina Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems

Discovery Day

Notes: words and music by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1970 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1998.

We celebrated Columbus,
And wasn’t that a lovely day!
Columbus came in a spangled suit,
And his men in rich array,
But Alioto’s tac squad
Kept the welcome committee away,
The native tribes
With the beautiful vibes.

Last year they scalped Columbus,
But they only did it in fun,
The Indians had brought the Calumet,
The invaders came with a gun,
Pointed at the tribes,
With the beautiful vibes.

The whites brought civilization,
And wasn’t that a fine affair,
TV antennas and whiskey
And smog to darken the air,
The waters were all polluted
That had been so sweet and clear,
For the tribes
With the beautiful vibes.

Forgive us, Indian brother
And teach us the proper way
To get along with each other
And the forests, the hills and the Bay.
If we can learn that lesson
That will be Discovery Day,
For us and the tribes
With the beautiful vibes.
