Malvina
Reynolds: Song Lyrics and Poems
We Can Stop Here
Notes: words and music
by Malvina Reynolds; copyright 1966 Schroder Music Company, renewed 1994.
Inspired by a news report of campers being rousted out of the mountains
behind Big Sur, California.
We can stop here for a day or two.
There's a mountain spring and a view
Across the hell below.
There's a stand of firs that is still uncut,
Some meadow grass and a wooden hut
And an apple tree.
We can stop here until they drive us out.
If we just pretend we are only friends
And innocent of love,
We can stay here for a day or two.
When they discover we know each other,
They'll throw us out of this place,
They'll set two angels with flaming swords at the gates.
But until they do,
For a day or two,
We can stay here by ourselves.
We can stop here, but it won't be long.
It won't be long
Because Eden belongs to somebody else.
